Bones Hold The Whole System Up

Full. It has been delicious.
Almost like the down homey
catering service which delivers
mac ‘n cheese, ham, greens

and biscuits. Small
time invested in rising
connections which linger
like a hint of cheddar cheese

in the dough. Suzuki
and home education lovely
ethereal electric charges of time
spent knowing
each other. That tenuous

moment between golden
brown and baked
too much. Getting it all

out in time.

Winston has been begging for “bones.” For two months all he has been able to talk about is “bones.” Bones are cool. They hold everything in place. Bones are important. He wants to go to the shop and get bones. Then, he wants to cook the bones.

I don't know where the bone shop is. He keeps trying to show me. We only come home with candy which means yet another brushing in the 3 to 5 brushings a day. But, he hasn't given up.

It's what we're doing right now. Trying to find our bones here in London. We need something to hold us up. Slowly, slowly, we are finding the bones of our lives.

Finally, three days ago, he discussed how we would roll the dough to make the bones. Big hand slap to the head. He wants scones.

We’ve been making Cheddar Cheese Bones ever since.

Cheese Bones (Otherwise known as American Biscuits)

2 C. all-purpose flour

2 t. baking powder

1/2 t. salt

1 t. garlic granules

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 C. butter

1 C. shredded cheddar cheese

2/3 C. milk

Chop the butter into 1 centimetre pieces. Put on a plate and place in freezer for 7 - 10 minutes.

Have toddler use a huge spoon to dump flour into measuring cup.

In a small shot glass put baking soda, salt and garlic. Have toddler dump contents into measuring cup on top of flour.

Grate cheddar cheese. The chant, “Up and Down. And Up and Down. And Up and Down. And Up and Down. And Up and Down.” sung to the Suzuki “I stop and you stop song” works very well. If you have the CD - play it while baking.

Preheat the oven to 425° F. (218) Lightly grease a baking sheet.

Have toddler dump flour mixture into a Magimix (food processor).

Have toddler throw almost-but-not-quite-frozen butter into bowl. Snap on the cap.

Have toddler press on button until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Have toddler dump in cheese.

Measure milk explaining that this is a “Dolt Job.” Let toddler dump in bowl. With lightening reflexes - snap that cap on an process until the dough comes together and forms a ball.

Get the dough out of the bowl.

Have toddler alternate between sprinkling and slapping flour on a cutting onto a board.

Let toddler have a good time with rolling. Supervise. Check you control freak. Hope for a dough thickness of 1 inch thickness.

Have toddler cut with a 2 inch biscuit cutter. Guide the cutting process. Or plan for less flakey biscuits because of multiple rollings.

Place on baking sheet.

Bake for 12 - 15 minutes or until they are a light brown.

Optional: Brush the tops of the biscuits with 2 T. melted butter after removing form the oven. This is a Dolt Job.
